Major films in production including the Avatar and Gladiator sequels are looking likely to be affected by Hollywood actors taking strike action. Promotional events such as red-carpet premieres will also be affected, such as Disney film Haunted Mansion, released later this month. Events including the Emmys and Comic-Con may be rescheduled or scaled back. In the industry's biggest shutdown for over 60 years, some 160,000 performers stopped work at midnight in LA. The announcement followed similar strike action from the Writers Guild of America (WGA), and brought most US film and TV productions to a halt.

Seeing people say dumb shit like “ i dont know how you expect me to support some hollywood strike when teachers are paid so little” first of all both writers and teachers should have livable wages and second of all YOU PEOPLE ARE SO DAMN CLOSE.

The problem is the system. The problem is capitalism

It’s Striking

Here’s the thing: the mail strikes are going to inconvenience me this year (have already done so - I get my meds via post), but I can mitigate against that. The nursing strikes, thank goodness, did not affect me directly, but I can see how they might if the future ones are necessary. Rail strikes are less of a thing for me currently as I’m not risking exposing my knackered immune system to public transport. That’s not the point.

All these events are inconveniencing people, making some parts of their lives harder, but if you’re not thinking about how workers choosing to protest in the only way left available to them - by withdrawing their labour, and crucially, not getting paid - and how vital these services are just by how they impact you, I don’t know what to tell you.

Everyone. EVERYONE needs to have the means at their disposal to live well, cover their basic needs of food and water, shelter, warmth, stability, security, family. EVERYONE. I’m not talking about deserving, I’m talking about needing. Every person on this planet needs the access to sustainable, secure living. And yes, I include in that criminals and drug users and people who don’t want to work. Everyone has the right to survival. The people on strike don’t have that. Their pay and conditions are so bad that people are leaving their organisations in droves, and those left are not being supported (not least because it’s proving difficult to replace the colleagues they’ve lost). They’re struggling to feed and safely house themselves and their families. This CANNOT be happening in the 21st Century, where we have more obscenely wealthy people than ever.

Union members think long and very hard before striking; it’s a huge matter for debate and negotiation, and is voted on by everyone in the union before the action is taken. Striking is a last resort, which should tell you a LOT.

So if you’re feeling angry or inconvenienced about it, do not blame the strikers - they are making an incredibly courageous move, and it’s the fault of the people failing to give them the means for survival (crucially - people who are incredibly wealthy and secure) that your post and your non-urgent medical appointments are being delayed, and you’re having to find other ways to get to work and school, etc. It’s on those failing to negotiate meaningfully, the greedy people putting profit above the safety and security of people like you. Don’t be fooled by media manipulation - those on strike have far more in common with you than you have with those telling you that the strikers are wrong. Never forget that. And never forget the importance of collective bargaining and the fact that rich people need you, and that you have more power than you realise.

Every time I see people calling strikers selfish or complaining about how much it impacts them or how much it inconveniences them that other people are protesting for worker's rights

Like do they not realise that any happiness or comfort they have experienced in life is built on a foundation of worker's rights and former successful strikes and protests?

Yay the WGA strike has reached a peaceful agreement. Please continue to support the SAG-AFTRA strikes, especially now that the Video Game Actors have just voted to strike.

Good luck to all who are striking in any profession, anywhere.

(And a fuck you to Thatcher who made striking in the UK so difficult.)

a quick word about the writers guild strike, for those of you who currently AREN'T guild members but would like to be one day: the WGA has always strongly enforced its right to ban from future membership any non-member who crosses the picket line and engages in scab writing, aka writing for any of the struck companies during the WGA strike.

so if you're seeing job openings for screenwriters at places like netflix, amazon, paramount, etc and you're thinking "hey, maybe i'll apply and get my foot in the door," just know that you WILL be scabbing and you WILL be barred from ever obtaining WGA membership. permanently.

It's completely understandable to find these strikes annoying and frustrating. That is the very purpose of them: to cause maximum inconvenience to their customers/userbase, as well as ceasing the flow of revenues in the hope of forcing their bosses to do something that they should really have been doing all along.

It's annoying that I am forced to work from home when trains and buses stop due to strike action.

It's annoying that I had to post the Christmas cards for my in-laws in a mad rush to make sure they arrive.

It's upsetting when my sister-in-law talks about how her small business is struggling because Royal Mail strikes meant her orders were not reaching customers in time.

It worries me that the strikes might affect my loved ones if they should need to go to the hospital, or have long-awaited appointments cancelled.

But, through all this frustration, we should defend and even support the strikes as much as we can, and direct our very justified ire at the bosses who have allowed these situations to escalate to this point. The bosses and senior management are more likely to have cars, use expensive couriers, and private healthcare. It isn't hurting them, and if we harass the striking workers, they will be happy to watch it.

So, be angry when there are strikes and at how they affect you, but try and direct them at the right targets.

also just a general rule of thumb: when nationalized/public service industries are striking, they ARE striking for YOUR benefit, ultimately. bus drivers are the ones who fight against capitalist upper management trying to shut down bus routes that "don't generate enough profits" or trying to generally set up a worse (public!) service for the sake of """"efficiency""""" and """"""cost optimization""""""" (read: pay less people and overwork them to give YOU, the public, a much worse service or commodity).

it's like this in schools, hospitals, public transportation, literally everywhere. the striking workers care for the public' needs more than the bosses will ever do. sure they want better work conditions which is (should be) enough of a reason to support strikes in general, but by supporting striking workers, you ultimately support your own quality of life. it's all intertwined
